Best Wet Cat Food for Indoor Cats in a New York Apartment
By Haven Bowl. Last reviewed November 3, 2026.
Short answer: The best wet cat food for indoor cats in a New York apartment matches your cat's life stage and lists meat or seafood among its first few ingredients, per Cornell Feline Health Center, which also says canned food is at least 75 percent moisture. Pick a size that fits one meal so leftovers do not crowd a small fridge.
Few foods are "best" for every cat, and a New York apartment adds its own questions. Where do opened cans go in a tiny fridge? How much does a case weigh on a fifth-floor walk-up? Here is how to judge a food by protein, moisture, life stage and price per ounce, then fit it to your space.
What is the best wet cat food for indoor cats in a New York apartment?
Use this five-step check on any brand:
- Find the life stage statement. AAFCO calls the nutritional adequacy statement "perhaps the most important part of a label" and lists the life stages as growth, maintenance and all life stages. Cornell says the claim should name the stage your cat is in. "Indoor" is a marketing term, not one of those stages.
- Read the first few ingredients. Ingredients are listed by weight, first to last, per AAFCO. Cornell says to look for meat, meat by-products or seafood among the first few. In wet food, water or broth can come first: Hill's lists "Water, Chicken" for its Adult Savory Chicken Entrée, and Weruva lists "Chicken Broth, Chicken" for its Cattyshack pouch. So look at the first few, not only the first.
- Check moisture. Cornell puts canned food at 75 percent moisture or more and dry food at 6 to 10 percent.
- Note calories and size. The label gives calories per can or pouch. Your cat's day is a calorie total, so the size sets how many servings you open.
- Do the price per ounce (see below).
Do indoor cats need fewer calories?
Often they burn fewer. Cornell's "Ask Elizabeth" column says cats that live strictly indoors expend fewer calories than those that go out and about. Cornell also says label feeding amounts are based on the average cat, so a calm apartment cat may need less. Cornell calls obesity the most common nutrition-related problem in cats.
Ask your vet for a body condition score, which the AAHA/AAFP guidelines rate on a 9-point scale where 6/9 or 7/9 is overweight. Tufts veterinary nutritionist Deborah Linder, DVM, says measuring by volume often leads to under- or overfeeding, so weigh portions on a small kitchen scale. Our guide on how much wet food to feed a cat per day has the calorie chart. Do not start a diet without your vet.
Are pouches or cans better in a small New York kitchen?
Neither wins on its own. What matters is how the size lines up with a meal. The table shows foods we checked on their own manufacturer pages on Nov 3, 2026. The last column is a worked example for a cat that needs 250 calories a day (your vet or the feeding guide gives your cat's real number).
| Food (maker's page) | Size | Calories per can or pouch | First ingredients listed | Moisture listed | Servings for 250 calories |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hill's Science Diet Adult Savory Chicken Entrée | 5.5 oz can | 181 | Water, Chicken | Not on the page | about 1.4 |
| Tiki Cat Puka Puka Luau Succulent Chicken | 2.8 oz can | 77 | Chicken, chicken broth | 81.5% (max) | about 3.2 |
| Tiki Cat Puka Puka Luau Succulent Chicken | 5.5 oz can | 155 | Chicken, chicken broth | 81.5% (max) | about 1.6 |
| Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Cattyshack (Chicken & Shrimp) | 3 oz pouch | 62 | Chicken Broth, Chicken, Tuna, Shrimp | 85% (max) | about 4 |
Weruva's page labels the pouch for adult cats, Hill's states a maintenance-of-adult-cats statement, and Tiki Cat's page did not show a nutritional adequacy statement, so read the can. We could not open the product pages for Fancy Feast, Purina Pro Plan or Royal Canin, so we left out their numbers. Use the same checklist on them.
The math shows the small-fridge issue. At 1.4 cans, Hill's 5.5 oz can leaves part of a can to store each day. Four Weruva pouches split into two meals leave nothing to store. Smaller servings suit single cats in small spaces, but if your cat is a slow eater the first meal's sit-out time still applies.

How do I store opened wet cat food in a small fridge?
Cornell says any unused portion of opened canned cat food should be refrigerated. The FDA says to promptly refrigerate or throw out leftover canned and pouched pet food, tightly cover it, set the fridge to 40 F or below, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds before and after handling it. Our guide on how long wet cat food can sit out lists the hour and day limits, so we do not repeat them here. Write the date on the lid.
How does price per ounce compare?
Divide the price by the total ounces. On weruva.com on Nov 3, 2026, a 12-pack of 3 oz pouches was listed at $22.68, which is 36 oz, or about $0.63 an ounce, or about $1.89 a pouch. That is one example, since prices change by store and by day.
Ounces alone can mislead. By the calories on the pages above, Hill's has about 33 calories an ounce (181 over 5.5 oz), Tiki Cat about 27.5 (77 over 2.8 oz) and Weruva about 21 (62 over 3 oz). A food with fewer calories an ounce means more ounces to meet the same daily total. So also work out price per 100 calories: price per pouch, divided by calories per pouch, times 100.
How do I get wet cat food delivered to a walk-up or doorman building?
Wet food is heavy. Hill's lists its Adult Indoor line in 24-can cases of 5.5 oz cans, which is 132 oz, or 8.25 lb of food before packaging. A 24-pouch case of 2.8 oz pouches is about 4.2 lb, and Weruva's 12-pack of 3 oz pouches is 2.25 lb. Those are the arithmetic from the listed pack sizes. Smaller cases are easier to carry up stairs.
Before you order, check three things on the store's page: the shipping cost, the free-shipping threshold, and how to add your apartment number and any building note to the address. If your building has a front desk or package room, that is a good delivery point, since you will not be home when a box arrives.
How can I keep an indoor cat active in a small apartment?
The AAFP and ISFM feline environmental needs guidelines say access to an elevated area increases a cat's vertical space, so a shelf or cat tree is a space-saver. They also say a cat should have a choice of resources, with a minimum of two feeding areas, and they suggest puzzle feeders or timed feeders to promote small, frequent meals. If you use one with wet food, remember the sit-out limit above. Cornell also says cats that live strictly indoors expend fewer calories, so play counts.
Where can I try a wet food before buying a big case?
Haven Bowl is a US wet cat food brand with a kitten trial box that lets you try four recipes before you commit to more. Starts from $19.99. Shipping is free on orders of $35 or more, and a flat $5.99 under $35. Talk to your vet about what suits your cat.

Frequently asked questions
Is wet or dry food better for indoor cats in an apartment?
Cornell says canned food is at least 75 percent moisture and dry food is 6 to 10 percent, and that wet food can be fed in addition to or instead of dry. Your vet can help you choose for your cat's weight and age. See do cats need wet food.
How many cans or pouches should an indoor cat eat a day?
Divide your cat's daily calories by the calories on one can or pouch. Cornell says once or twice a day is appropriate for most adults. See how much wet food to feed a cat per day for the chart.
Is there an "indoor cat" life stage?
No. The life stages on AAFCO's label page are gestation/lactation, growth, maintenance and all life stages. "Indoor" on a package is marketing. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for the stage your cat is in, and ask your vet about calories.
How long can I keep opened wet food in a small fridge?
Limits vary by source, so use the shortest one you are given. Cornell says to refrigerate unused opened cans, and the FDA says to cover them and keep the fridge at 40 F or below. Our sit-out and fridge guide lists each limit.
Are pouches or cans cheaper?
It depends on the brand and store. Compare price per ounce and price per 100 calories, since calories an ounce differ. On manufacturer pages, Hill's is about 33 calories an ounce, Tiki Cat about 27.5 and Weruva about 21.
Does the delivery building matter?
A front desk or package room can hold a box, but check the shipping cost and add your apartment number and any building note to the address. By the pack sizes on Hill's page, 24 cans of 5.5 oz hold 8.25 lb of food, so smaller cases suit stairs.
Does the type of food change how much an indoor cat should eat?
Total calories matter more than the food type. Cornell says cats that live strictly indoors expend fewer calories, and AAHA says free-choice feeding can predispose to overconsumption. Weigh portions and ask your vet for a body condition score.
